Obituary for Blanche Freitag Summy

Blanche Darlene Frietag Summy, 91, of East Palatka, passed peacefully from this life on Monday, May 3, 2021 at her home following an extended illness. A native of Pinewood, Minnesota, she was a 1946 graduate of Aggie University of Minnesota - Northwest School of Agriculture where she played basketball and volleyball and sang in the Glee Club. On November 24, 1948, Blanche married the love of her life, Gene Summy. She and Gene co-owned and operated Summy and Sons Truck Stop in Spuds. She had also worked at Hale’s Food Store in Hastings and in later years, was a caretaker for numerous families in the Hastings area. Blanche was one of the original founding members of Dunn’s Creek Baptist Church. She was also an amazing 45 -year breast cancer survivor! In her leisure time, Blanche enjoyed gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Gene Summy, her parents, William F. Freitag and Ester Anderson Freitag, a daughter-in-law, Janice Rene Summy and son-in-law, Michael C. Smith.
Blanche is survived by 2 sons, Calvin Summy and Carl Summy (Betty), 2 daughters, Genie Shanahan (Jay) and Tina Magee (Hal), her grandchildren, Aaron Summy, Chauncey Summy, Cliff Traber and Kristin Traber, 13 great-grandchildren and her canine best friend and companion Lucy.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 8, 2021 at WestView Cemetery in Palatka with Pastor Terry Wright officiating. No public visitation is scheduled.
