Carol Joyce Cunningham died peacefully at her home in Jacksonville, Florida on June 14, 2022. She was 83.
Carol was born December 24, 1938, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the only daughter of Leo Earl and Joyce Ann Cunningham. She spent her formative years in Winston-Salem and Jacksonville and was graduated in 1957 from Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville. She was employed by The Prudential Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville for 37 years, retiring in 1994. She loved traveling and was especially passionate about cruise ship sailing. Her other passion was sports, particularly professional football. She was a huge fan of the Washington Redskins, now Commanders, football team. She reveled in their successes in the 1980s and early 1990s. She was also a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Braves and Boston Celtics and enjoyed watching the Braves on summer evenings. Carol was a lover of all animals, especially cats. She had a wicked sense of humor and always had a good laugh when she recalled her parents naming her Carol on Christmas Eve 1938 after hearing Christmas carols being sung outside her mother’s hospital room.
Carol was very proud of her family and its heritage. She was a devout Catholic who practiced her faith daily, and she had much love for her country. She is survived by her brother Donald Cunningham, her sister-in-law Jo Ann Cunningham, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Frank Cunningham and John Cunningham, and her sisters-in-law Peggy Cunningham and Evelyn Cunningham.
The family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to Wyndham Lakes Assisted Living and VITAS Healthcare, both of whom helped ease Carol’s suffering during her final illness. A Rosary followed by a Requiem Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Interlachen, Florida at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2022. Interment of the ashes will follow immediately thereafter in Pineview Cemetery in Interlachen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Carol’s memory to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, P. O. Box 207, Interlachen, FL 32148.
