Obituary for Carolyn Wyllys Brown

Carolyn Wyllys Brown, 83, of East Palatka, passed from this life on Friday, June 26, 2020 at her home following an extended illness. Born in Palatka, Carolyn lived in St. Johns and Putnam Counties most all her life. She was a 1955 Graduate of Palatka High School and attended Florida State University where she obtained her MRS degree. Carolyn would later become employed at St. Johns River Community College for 10 years. While there, she earned her Associate in Arts Degree in general education. Real estate was her hobby and she was most proud of the fact she was also able to pass a certification exam and become a licensed real estate broker. In 1980, after managing an insurance office in Keystone Heights for a year, Carolyn began a career as the executive secretary in the Department of Administration at the St. John River Water Management District. She was later promoted to the position of Board secretary. Carolyn was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, an Investment club as well as the Kiwanis Club of Palatka where she was involved in a mentoring program with children in reading clubs at James A. Long Elementary School. In her leisure time, she was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading, thrift shops, and had developed many friends on E-Bay. Make no mistake though, what was most important to Carolyn was being “Mema” to her grand and great-grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Amos N. Wyllys and Miriam Smith Wyllys and a sister, Betty Rands.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, William Brown of East Palatka, Brad Brown of St. Augustine and Cheryl Chambers (Scott) of Elkton, a sister, Nancy Roberts (George) of Starke, 5 grandchildren, Lyndsay Linder (Michael), Taylor Brown, Michael Brown (Victoria), Kalie Norman (Lehman) and Daniel L. Chambers, 4 great-grandchildren, Luke Linder, Sterling Brown, Fisher Norman and Miles Norman, a cousin, Patsy Stephens, 2 nieces, Brenda Knisley and Karen Rands, 2 nephews, Richard Roberts and Scott Roberts and her faithful companion, “Skippy”.
Memorial services celebrating Carolyn’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Bro. Gary Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00 A.M.
In lieu of cut flowers, please consider a growing or potted plant to carry on Carolyn’s memory. Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Carolyn’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com.
Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
