Obituary for Cheryl Ann Owens
Cheryl Ann Owens, 73, of Palatka, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at UF Health North in Jacksonville following an extended illness. She was a native of Melbourne and had lived in Putnam County since 1955 coming from Starke. She was a 1965 graduate of Palatka High School and in 1964, Cheryl was the recipient of the Hancock Award given for outstanding achievement in athletics. For 30 years, Cheryl served as assistant recreation director alongside her husband, Sweet, who was recreation director for the City of Palatka and then for Putnam County. In her leisure time, she enjoyed cooking, researching genealogy, and especially loved making trips to the cabin in Poor Valley, VA.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Carlton Tillman and Mae Brantley Tillman.
Cheryl is survived by her husband of 55 years, Arthur Lee “Sweet” Owens, sons, Todd Owens (Pam) of Ft. Pierce and Travis Owens (Debbie) of Jacksonville, brothers, Buddy Tillman (Cheryl) of St. Augustine, and Kevin Tillman (Cheri) of Starke, sister, Christina Williams (Tim) of Tamarac, grandchildren, Brennan Owens, Garrett Owens, Tyler Owens, Austin Cain and Christie Cain, 1 great-granddaughter, Hailey Dilmuth as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Oak Hill West Cemetery in Palatka with Bro. C. L. Overturf, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m. until time of services.
Due to concerns of COVID 19 the graveside service will be livestreamed and can be seen on Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home's Facebook page.
