Obituary for Christopher Marcus "Chris" Barnes Sr.

Christopher Marcus “Chris” Barnes, Sr., 43, of Hastings, passed from this life at home on Monday, February 15, 2021. He was born in St. Augustine on 11/13/1977, a birthday he shared with his beloved Grandmother Nancy. Chris was a lifelong resident of Hastings, a town where nearly everyone knew him. He was a 1995 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Augustine where he received the “McGyver” Award. Chris loved working with his family on their multi-generational farm. He was instrumental in the success of Barnes Farm. He could fix anything anyone broke, and never complained about doing that.

Chris served as a board member on the Putnam-St. Johns County Farm Bureau Chapter of Florida Farm Bureau and was recently elected to serve as President. He was a member of Anastasia Baptist Church in Elkton. Chris was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Chris accepted our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of ten.

Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clyde M Barnes, Ralph and Mary Gosline and his father-in-law, Web Merwin.

He is survived by his wife (the love of his life) of 15 years, Heather Barnes of Hastings; two sons, Christopher Marcus Barnes, Jr. and Colby Joseph Barnes; a daughter, Sadie Anne Barnes, all of Hastings; his parents, Mark and Anne Barnes of Hastings; his paternal grandmother, Nancy Barnes of Hastings; a brother, James Barnes (Rebekah) of Hastings; a sister, Virginia Barnes of Elkton; his mother-in-law, Jeanne Merwin of Palatka; his special and loving Uncle Joe and Aunt Dottie Scruggs of Palatka; nieces, Isabella Barnes and Amelia McGee and nephew, Logan Barnes. There are numerous other extended family members, many of whom were extremely close to him, and all of them are grieving the loss of Chris.

Services celebrating Chris’s life will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 21, 2021 at the Barnes Family Farm Barn, 8155 Barnes Farm Road, Hastings, with Bro. Willie B. McKinnon, III officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill West Cemetery in Palatka. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of services at 2:00 P.M.
