Obituary

Francis (Frank) G. Henley, 95, passed from this life on Wednesday September 16, 2020 at Putnam Community Medical Center. Born in New York City, Frank retired to Palatka in 1985. He has been around the world and back joining the Merchant Marines at age 18 in 1943. It was a career that lasted almost a decade during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Part of his job with the Merchant Marines was to keep his vessel in ship shape and manning the guns for combat. During his service time, he saw several ships being torpedoed including one next to the one he was on. All in all, Frank was awarded several medals, a letter from Harry Truman and stated that he was proud to be an American and proud of the time he served in the Merchant Marines.

After serving, Frank spent 28 years working in New York City’s harbors piloting boats up and down the East River as a Captain’s First Mate while opening and running several businesses before moving to Bostwick to be on the St. Johns River. He enjoyed the warmth of the citizens in the Palatka community. Frank provided service to the Lions Club, the Board of Elections, Senior Friends, the American Legion Bert Hodge Post 45, and numerous other organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gladys and Louis.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Gregory and Angela, many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Services celebrating Frank’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 21, 2020 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastor Cliff Lyda officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00.

In accordance with City of Palatka ordinances concerning Covid 19 guidelines, all attendees will be required to wear a face covering at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to First Presbyterian Church Palatka at https://fpcpalatka.com.

Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Frank’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com.

Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

Mr. Henley and I worked together at the polling precinct in Bostwick for a number of years. He was a dependable worker, very pleasant to work with with. My deepest sympathy to you. I want you to know that Putnam County appreciated his dedication and service. Charlotte Hancock
