Obituary for Gary Stephen Comer

Gary Stephen Comer, 73, of Palatka, passed from this life on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at UF Health – Shands in Gainesville. Born in Palatka and raised in Bardin, Gary was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and graduated from Palatka South High School in 1968. He had served in the Army National Guard. Gary worked in the family business, Comer Logging and later operated Comer Timber Company. He was a member of the Putnam County Hunting Club and in years past was a member of the Bardin Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In his leisure time, Gary enjoyed NASCAR, hunting and bass fishing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sylvester Comer, his mother, Starlein Hilliard Comer, his mother-in-law, Margaret Dolley and a nephew, Levi Comer.
Gary is survived by his wife of 44 years, JoDeane Comer, his children, Chad Comer (April), Dustin Comer (Suzie), Bubba Comer (Stacey) and Lacey Comer (J.J.), 4 sisters, Shella Bennett (John), Karen Stark, Sherri Ramirez (John), Michelle Sanders (Robbie), a brother, Shane Comer (Lena), 6 grandchildren, Kirstin Comer, Sage Comer, Tegan Comer, Rilyn Comer, Knzlyn Comer and Gracie Bass, step-mother, Malinda W. Comer, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Linda Perry, special sister-in-law, Debbie Robbins and husband Floyd, his best friend, Dale Becker and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Gary’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastor Jason Sharp officiating. Burial will follow at Etoniah Cemetery in Bardin. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
