Obituary for George Wesley Laseter

(RET) SGM George Wesley Laseter, 91, of Middleburg, passed from this life on Monday, February 6, 2023 at Ascension St. Vincent’s Clay County Hospital. A native of Norman Park (Colquitt County) Georgia, he resided in Middleburg for the past five years moving there from Hinesville, Georgia where he lived for 40 years. He was a 1948 graduate of Crescent City High School. George retired from the U.S. Army as a Sgt General Major following 27 years of honorable service, including 5 years of overseas tours. Following his time in the Army, he worked another 10 years in Civil Service. He was a member of the NCO Officers Club and the Hinesville Lions Club where he was a Past President. George was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Hinesville. He served there as a deacon, was involved in mission work and the Goldenheirs, sang in the choir, was a part of the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief Team and after retiring, was a part-time groundskeeper at the church. In his leisure time, George enjoyed yard work, gardening, reading, traveling and especially time spent with family fishing and shrimping.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Wesley Laseter and Edna Branam Laseter, a son, Roger Lawrence, a sister, Louise Halcomb and a brother, Howard Laseter.
George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Wells Laseter of Middleburg, his children, David Lawrence (Paula) of Woodstock, GA, Linda Cheek (Hugh) of Green Cove Springs, Donna Perryman (Rick) of Middleburg, Terry Laseter (Laura) of Okatie, SC and Mae Bowen (Gary) of Odom, GA, a brother, Leonard Laseter (Jeanette) of Melbourne, a sister, Shirley Taylor of Opelika, AL, a brother-in-law, Jerry Halcomb of LaGrange, GA, 9 Grandchildren, Mark, Carolyn Jeanette (“C.J.”), Justin, Latisha, Brock, Gavin, Megan, Grant and Gracie, 12 Great-Grandchildren and expecting a Great-Great-Grandchild soon.
Services celebrating George’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 10, 2023 at Lake Asbury Baptist Church, 2674 Henley Road in Green Cove Springs. The family will receive friends Friday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00 A.M. The burial will be Friday at 3:00 P.M. at San Mateo Cemetery with the U.S. Army conducting full military honors.
