Obituary for Harvie Dennis

Harvie C. Dennis, 89, of Palatka, passed from this life unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital. Born in Soperton, Georgia to John R. Dennis and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Stewart Dennis, he moved to Palatka in 1948. Harvie retired as a roll wrapper supervisor with Hudson Pulp & Paper (Georgia Pacific) following 47 years of service. He had also served as union president. Harvie served with the National Guard in the 148th AAA Battery in Ft. McClellan, AL. He was a member of New Beginning Baptist Fellowship in Palatka. Harvie was also a founding member of the Southwest Volunteer Fire Department. He had been involved with Pop Warner Football and was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as an “extreme” Florida Gator fan and SJRSC baseball fan. He was a volunteer campground host at Mistletoe State Park in Appling, GA. Harvie was a world traveler and a “7- day cruise fanatic” (anything less than 7 days was not acceptable!). He was also an ATV and white-water rafting enthusiast and served as the official family water ski instructor! He likewise loved shrimping and fishing for Halibut in Alaska as well as attending Gospel and Bluegrass events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Frank Dennis, W.O. Dennis, Monroe Dennis, J.R. Dennis, J.W. Dennis, Vida Pearl Holley and Lucille McMichael.
Harvie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Faye Dennis, a son, Shawn Dennis (Erin), 2 daughters, Sherry Whitaker (Mark) and Dianne Wilkinson (Doug), a brother, Chuck Dennis (Marion), a sister, Vera Lane (G.W.), 5 grandchildren, Marquel Bailey, Dana Wilkinson, Angie Scherrer, Aaron Whitaker and Ryan Wilkinson, 10 great-grandchildren, Allison and Emily Bailey, Herby Scherrer, Ava Schulze, Clayton Wilkinson, Ella Schulze, Kayleigh, Kinley, Tristan Wilkinson and Gabby Scherrer and several great-great-grandchildren.
Services celebrating Harvie’s life will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastors Rick McClure and Denny Brown officiating. The Florida National Guard will also conduct military honors. The family will receive friends Friday at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home from 6-8 P.M
