Obituary for Jimmy Charles Merritt

Jimmy Charles Merritt, 77, of Hollister, passed from this life on Thursday, November 09, 2023, at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital following an extended illness. He was a native of Malone, FL and had lived in Putnam County since 1969 coming from Marianna. Jimmy had worked as a right-of-way superintendent for Clay Electric, retiring after 50 years of service. He was also a certified arborist. Jimmy enjoyed competitive shooting. He participated in events across several states and won many prizes and trophies. Jimmy’s greatest joy was spending time with family and spoiling his grand and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mancel C. and Ester V. Merritt and brother, Lawrence E. Merritt.
He is survived by his wife of 58 ½ years, Loretta Merritt, children, Joseph Clay Merritt, Sophia L. Russ and Tony R. Merritt (Tina), brother, M.D. Merritt, sister, Louise Baxter, grandchildren, Jacob Merritt, Jason Hutchins (Amanda), Heather Lynn Meier (Troy), Jessica Stanford, Dalton Price and Brandy Cooper (Cecilia) as well as numerous great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 13, 2023 at Hollister Sweetwater Cemetery with Bro. Ricky Bybee officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka between 3:00 – 5:00 pm.
