Obituary for Joel Mathew Hull

Joel Mathew Hull, Sr.

Joel Mathew Hull, Sr., 92, of Palatka passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Roberts Haven Hospice Care Center following a brief illness. Joel went by Joe, but was called Joe Mack by many from Palatka.

Joe was born in Live Oak, Florida on April 23, 1931. His family moved from Live Oak to East Palatka when Joe was a youngster. Joe graduated from Mellon High School in 1949 where he played football (All Conference) and baseball. Joe served as Vice-President of the Senior Class as well. Following high school, he attended Rollins College on a football scholarship. Rollins discontinued the football program, but offered the football players an opportunity to try out for baseball and to continue with a scholarship if they made the baseball team. Joe made the baseball team and later earned his B. S. degree in Education from Rollins. Joe
belonged to the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at Rollins. He would later earn his Masters Degree from Southeastern Louisiana University.

Joe began his coaching and teaching career in Eau Gallie, Florida where he met his sweetheart of 69 years. He later moved to Starke, Fl for a coaching job, moved to Palatka for a teaching and coaching job and in 1961 moved to Panama City, Florida where he taught history, was an Assistant coach and became Head football coach and Athletic Director of the Bay County Tornadoes. He ended his coaching tenure in 1973 and took a job in administration as an Assistant Principal in Starke, Florida. After three years in Starke, he took the job of Principal at Crescent City High School. Joe ended his career in education at the District Office as Human Resource Director.

Joe had been involved in many endeavors in the Putnam County community. He was an active member of St. James Methodist Church where he held many positions in service to his church.
Joe belonged to the Crescent City Rotary Club for many years. He was a Charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Palatka where he was Past President and served on the Board of Directors. Joe was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow Award as well. He was an avid Florida Gator fan and belonged to the Putnam County Gator Club. Joe served on the Riverbend Condominium Board over the years where he loved to get out in his boat and fish with family and friends. Joe and Nancy made several mission trips to Haiti servicing those less fortunate. He was a longtime supporter of Rodeheaver Boys Ranch where he liked to take people to see the good work being done there.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents James B. and Dana Lanier Hull, his precious baby William Brantley Hull as well as his siblings, J. B. Hull, Jr and Katheryn Hull Dancy. Joe is survived by this wife Nancy Snead Hull; daughter Nancy K. Hull Denmark; sons Joel Matthew Hull, Jr (Sheila) and Michael Scott Hull (Julie). His grandchildren; Stephen G. Denmark, III, Joel Matthew Hull, III (Jules), Zachary Scott Hull (Lindsey), Taylor Hull (Justin) and Dalton Scott Hull. Four precious great grandchildren; Ava Dorsey, Brantley Hull, Palmer Hawkins and Sadie Jane Hull; and many nieces and nephews.

Services celebrating Joe’s precious life will be Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 11:00 with visitation at 10:00. The visitation and service will be held at St. James Methodist Church with
Pastor John Schafer and Rev. Hardy Sandlin officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery, Palatka, Florida.
