John T. Black passed away on September 6th 2022 at the age of 92 years young, joining our loving Creator after a long and adventure-filled life.
John was born in Franklin, Ohio on Feb 6, 1930 to parents John A. and Dollie Black.
At the age of 15, he and his family moved to Florida in 1945, settling first in the Ocala area. In 1949 they moved to Palatka. John commented numerous times that he was glad they moved to Palatka where he met Betty, the love of his life.
In 1951 John was drafted into the Army for service in the Korean Conflict serving only one year. He was discharged to care for his widowed mother. After his military obligation was complete, he returned to Palatka where he and Betty were married on Oct 9th, 1953 at Peniel Baptist Church. In October they will have been married 69 years.
John worked at the Hudson/Georgia Pacific plant for 40 years, retiring in 1992. Since retiring, John stayed busy as a “Mister Fixit” for his home, family and friends.
John was a member of Peniel Baptist Church. He loved his church family and was always ready to help in different needs of the church and community. He was quick to take up a donation for someone in need. John and Betty have been active members of Peniel Baptist Church all these years.
John was always a family man. He had no desire to fish or hunt, as he was happy spending time with his family.
On a regular basis, John was always expressing how fortunate he was, and giving the Lord thanks for his blessings. He listed his greatest blessings as being his family and friends, and a long and happy marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Albert and Dollie Black, brothers Paul Black, Cecil Black & Claris Black; sisters Doris Dickson and Eva Black and Daughter-in-Law Linda Black.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Bennett Black; his daughter Deborah (Bill) Winecoff of Salisbury NC; two sons Michael Black of Peniel and Jeffery (Rebecca) Black of Jacksonville; grandchildren April Branch, Alan Branch, Crystal Winecoff, Tyler Black, Jennifer Reed, Shannon Martin and Max Black; along with many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
