Juan Reyes “John” Gonzalez, 71, of Palatka, passed from this life on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Mexico, he moved to Palatka in 2007 from Lander, Wyoming. John served in the U.S. Army as a dog handler with the military police during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Sergeant after 14 years of service. Following his time in the Army, John worked as an auto mechanic and then as long-distance truck driver. John eventually became a certified nursing assistant and provided private nursing care to numerous folks in the community. John’s gentle and caring manner was truly a quality that made John so beloved by those he provided care to.
He was a dedicated member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club. John enjoyed watching car shows, cooking shows and animal shows
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Maria Reyes Gonzalez as well as 2 brothers, Pedro Reyes Gonzalez and Francisco Reyes Gonzalez.
John is survived by his wife of 14 years, Tammy Baxter of Palatka, 9 siblings, Alonzo Gonzalez (Emma), Mary Gonzalez, Robert Gonzalez, Susan Ashbee (Barry), Rick Gonzalez (Maria), Sylvia Cruickshank (Ed), Benjamin Gonzalez, Jr., Joe Gonzalez (Lesa) and Paul Gonzalez (Dionne) and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services celebrating John’s life will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. James United Methodist Church with Pastor Glenda Brayman officiating.
Due to concerns with the Covid 19 virus, the family has decided against a reception following the service in an effort to keep all friends and family as safe as possible.
All attendees to the service will be required to wear a facial covering and practice distancing guidelines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations by sent to St. James United Methodist Church, 400 Reid St., Palatka, FL 32177 or to S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue of Putnam County, P.O. Box 188, Hollister, FL 32147.

I first met Juan working at precent 37/38 at the Palatka Women club for years now he was always talking about his babies instead of us asking we were Whispering around trying to figure out what babies was he talking about , this year he said his cats are his babies and they were looking for him to come home . He also told us that this year may be his last year working , I never thought that would be the last time we would see him . RIP my friend your babies will be alright.

I First met John at Hospice when my husband Jordan was frequently a patient at Hospice. John was always busy helping someone. I was surprised when I joined Ms. Dews Friday morning breakfast club to see John as one of our members. That proves how special he was. John was a sweet heart 'always kind and helpful. John will be missed by many friends. Sending a Hug and Love to Tammy and her family .

My heart breaks knowing John is gone from us too soon. I first met him as a stranger in Walmart asking for his help to pick out gifts (prizes for games) for young boys at the Boys Ranch Christmas party - not even knowing he was a fellow Kiwanian. We met again during an interclub and just laughed at the whole coincidence. And later he attended those parties with us. What a sweet and genuine man. He will be definitely missed. Many blessings to his family, Tajaro Dixon.

I was so very very sad to read about John. When he lived in the Riverton and Lander Darien he was a caregiver for my husband Leonard who had MS. John was so wonderful, loving, kind and caring. He was also very encouraging for Leonard and had a great sense of humor. A very special thing about John was after he moved to Florida he would call and check up on us, and even after Leonard died he would call and check up on me. Such a kind caring man and Tammy he loves you very very much and was always telling us wonderful things about you and your life in Florida. Please know that I’m keeping you in my prayers during this sorrowful time. I’m sure John and Leonard are up in heaven reminiscing about the good all days, and each free of their Earthly physical limitations. God bless you. Daria Wood Riverton Wyoming

Tammy my dear friend, I cannot express how sad I am for you and your family at this time. You and John were truly loving soulmates. He did anything for anyone and I don’t know of a more kind and helpful person than your John. The both of you have been such a wonderful example of how to live a blessed life. What beautiful people-you both are. May he always be surrounded by eternal love and Light . My prays are for you and your family and that John is surrounded by the Love and peace of God. His fire will always burn bright in the Hearts of those he knew. Our very deepest condolences . Much love to you ❤️
