Obituary for Juan Reyes Gonzalez

Juan Reyes “John” Gonzalez, 71, of Palatka, passed from this life on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Mexico, he moved to Palatka in 2007 from Lander, Wyoming. John served in the U.S. Army as a dog handler with the military police during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Sergeant after 14 years of service. Following his time in the Army, John worked as an auto mechanic and then as long-distance truck driver. John eventually became a certified nursing assistant and provided private nursing care to numerous folks in the community. John’s gentle and caring manner was truly a quality that made John so beloved by those he provided care to.
He was a dedicated member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club. John enjoyed watching car shows, cooking shows and animal shows
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Maria Reyes Gonzalez as well as 2 brothers, Pedro Reyes Gonzalez and Francisco Reyes Gonzalez.
John is survived by his wife of 14 years, Tammy Baxter of Palatka, 9 siblings, Alonzo Gonzalez (Emma), Mary Gonzalez, Robert Gonzalez, Susan Ashbee (Barry), Rick Gonzalez (Maria), Sylvia Cruickshank (Ed), Benjamin Gonzalez, Jr., Joe Gonzalez (Lesa) and Paul Gonzalez (Dionne) and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services celebrating John’s life will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. James United Methodist Church with Pastor Glenda Brayman officiating.
Due to concerns with the Covid 19 virus, the family has decided against a reception following the service in an effort to keep all friends and family as safe as possible.
All attendees to the service will be required to wear a facial covering and practice distancing guidelines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations by sent to St. James United Methodist Church, 400 Reid St., Palatka, FL 32177 or to S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue of Putnam County, P.O. Box 188, Hollister, FL 32147.
