Obituary for Lowell Gilmore

Lowell Dallas Gilmore passed peacefully at home on Saturday, March 4 at the age of 101. He was born in 1921 on a farm in Eckerty, a small town in southern Indiana. He was the first of three sons and graduated from French Lick High School way before Larry Byrd attended. Lowell went on to earn a correspondence degree in mechanical engineering. He was married three times and had one daughter and five stepchildren.

After deciding that farm life was not for him, he worked in a furniture factory in Indiana and then moved to Chicago, where he received his machinist background. In 1942, he volunteered to serve in WWII and spent most of his 3-year term in the Aleutian Islands as part of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. After discharge, Lowell went to work at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, MD, where he spent his career as a tool and die maker and first-class machinist until retirement at age 57.

Lowell owned a boat in which he toured the Chesapeake Bay. During the 60's and 70's, he and his partner owned and served as pit crew for Chevelle racecars in the Late Model Sportsman class on the NASCAR circuit. Lowell also owned a Piper Cherokee 180 during the 70's and 80's and flew up and down the eastern seaboard.

After retirement, he moved to Interlachen where he spent his last 45 years. For the Interlachen Lake Estates Station 17 VFD, Lowell was the treasurer of the association for several decades and was also in charge of bingo every Friday night. He also served as treasurer of the Interlachen Lakes Estates Homeowners Association.
