Obituary for Mary Lucille "Mary Lou" Helwig

Mary Lou Helwig, 76, of Babson Park, Florida, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at her son’s home in Palatka following an extended illness. A native of Dayton, Ohio, she resided in Babson Park since 1974 moving there from Morehead, Kentucky. Mary Lou taught in the Polk County School District for 35 years, most of which was at Babson Park Elementary School. She was a member of South Lake Wales Church of God. In her leisure time, Mary Lou thoroughly enjoyed her many trips to Disney World.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl B. Sluss and Opal Litton Sluss.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jack W. Helwig, III of Babson Park, a son, Jack W. Helwig, IV (Susan) of Palatka, 2 brothers, Eddie Sluss (Jean) and Tom Sluss, 2 sisters, Rhonda Ramey (Eddie) and Julie Neill (Jim), all of Morehead, KY, a granddaughter, Sara Bauman and 2 great-grandchildren, Sadie Bauman and Paul Bauman.
Private family services and burial were held on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Oak Hill Cemetery with Bro. Ricky Bybee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to Vitas Hospice, 511 W. Towles Road, Suite B., Palatka, FL 32177.
