Mildred Keaton Horton, 94, of Palatka, passed from this life on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Five Oaks Rest Home in Welaka following an extended illness. A native of Waycross, Georgia, she resided in Palatka since 1955 coming from Ocala. Mildred had worked in a variety of fields over the years beginning in her first job as a telephone operator with Southern Bell for 2 years before transitioning to Palatka Atlantic National Bank where she worked her way up to head cashier. Following her time at the bank, Mildred worked in the bookstore at St. Johns River Junior College before taking a position at the St. Johns River Water Management District in Palatka in 1974. Mildred was named Assistant Executive Director in 1989 and in 1990 became the Executive Consultant. She retired in March 1990 following 16 years of service. Following her retirement she served as a bookkeeper with her husband Curtis’ business – Shamrock Greenhouse. Mildred was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palatka and had also been very involved in the community. She was the first female President of the Rotary Club of Palatka and worked with Habitat for Humanity. Mildred was also a supporter of the Rodeheaver Boys Ranch. In her leisure time, Mildred enjoyed reading.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Curtis F. Horton, a son, Curtis F. “Kirk” Horton, Jr. and 6 siblings.
Mildred is survived by her children, Brenda Poole (Gary) of San Mateo, Leigh Ann King (Darrell) of Palatka and Robert L. “Robby” Gandy, Jr. of Leesburg, 4 grandchildren, Robert L. “Tre” Gandy, III, Kirk Poole (Becky), Tosha Parnell (Arthur) and Niki Tyre (Stephen), 7 great-grandchildren, Bailey Poole, Ryley Poole, Maggie Poole, Hector Rios, Veronica Rios, Austin Parnell and Piper Tyre, 2 great-great-grandchildren, Ezekiel Lujan and Aaniyah Parnell and several nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Mildred’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 9, 2023 at the First Baptist Church in Palatka with Pastor Ron Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens with Bro. Andy Rabun conducting committal services. The family will receive friends Monday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00 A.M.
