Obituary for Robert Edward "Bobby" Rivers

Robert Edward “Bobby” Rivers, 85, of Palatka, passed from this life on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at Radiant Nursing and Rehab following an extended illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Palatka. During his junior year of high school, Bobby, joined the United Sates Army Reserves. After his graduation in 1957, he went to Boot Camp in Fort Jackson, SC and was later assigned to a combat engineer’s unit in Fort Leonard, MO. Bobby completed his duty in Fort Leonard and returned to Palatka where he served an additional six years in the Army Reserves. He received an honorable discharge in January of 1964. Bobby had worked as a lime kiln operator at Georgia Pacific until he retired. He had also worked at the Palatka Fire Department, was a sheriff’s auxiliary volunteer and had worked as a funeral attendant for Johnson-Davis and Johnson-Overturf Funeral Homes. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Palatka where he served as a deacon since 2008 and was also a member of Pineland Masonic Lodge #86 F&AM.
He is preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Bertie Bennett Rivers and parents, William Carl and Vivian Rivers.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Edna Rivers, son, James M. “Jimmy” Rivers, daughters, Betty Dennard (John), and Cheryl Fox, stepchildren, Bridget Dennis (Paul) and James Brafford (Kristy), 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Palatka with Bro. Ron Smith, Bro. Vernon Harkey and Bro. Eddie Parcher officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill West Cemetery with military honors rendered by the U.S. Army and Masonic Rites conducted by Pineland Lodge #86. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday beginning at 11:00 am until time of services.
