Obituary for Rudolph William "Rudy" Grabhorn Jr.

Rudolph William “Rudy” Grabhorn, Jr., 97, of Palatka, passed from this life on Thursday, October 27, 2022 in Gainesville following an extended illness. Rudy was born in Colon in the Panama Canal Zone and resided in Palatka since 1941 coming from Panama. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he was a purple heart recipient. Rudy was a 1950 graduate of the University of Florida, receiving a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration. Years ago, he worked at the Checkerboard Feed store in downtown Palatka. He then entered the Insurance industry, first working as an independent agent and then for 28 years as representative for Prudential Insurance in Palatka. Rudy had been a charter member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club where he served as President in 1969 and had over 50 years of perfect attendance. He was a member of American Legion Post #45 and years ago served with the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary Division. Rudy was also a member of the Over 50’s Dance Club. He had enjoyed bowling in years past and was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a Florida Gator Fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Catherine Williams “Cat” Grabhorn, his parents Rudolph William Grabhorn, Sr. and Irma Lehman Grabhorn as well as a son, Rudy Young.
Rudy is survived by his loving companion of 17 years, Marilyn Mims of Gainesville, 2 sons, Earle Young (Lorena) of St. Louis, MO and Rudy Grabhorn, III (Pamela Whitt) of Wildwood, a daughter, Sissy Greene (Mark McQuaig) of Ocala, 4 grandchildren, Tiffany, Brittany, Tyler and Haley, brother-in-law Paul Williams of OK, sister-in-law, Betty Williams of St. Augustine and numerous other grand and great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of Rudy’s life will be held at his residence, 2908 Meadows Lane in Palatka, on Saturday, November 5, 2022 from Noon until 4:00 P.M. Family and friends are invited to join the family in celebrating his memory and sharing stories.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.
