Mr. Frank P. DeGeyter Jr. passed away on 14 July 2021 after an extended illness. Frank, or Poppie as he was known by his family was born July 5, 1936, in Paterson, New Jersey to Frank DeGeyter, Sr and Angelina (Lena) Den Boer DeGeyter. Poppie was raised in New Jersey, but the family moved to Pennsylvania where Frank met and married Sandra Spangenberg. The family operated the River View Inn Tavern for many years. During Christmas season, the family gathered names of the local patrons’ children and held an all-day Christmas party for the kids which included a horse drawn sleigh ride. Each child in attendance received a gift from Santa and enjoyed a meal with their families. Poppie is survived by his Aunt Flarie Den Boer, cousins Barbara Maguire, Pat Den Boer and Doreen Farrell.
Sandra Spangenberg DeGeyter passed away on 28 December 2021 after an extended illness. Sandra was born August 4, 1940, to Jesse Spangenberg and Helen Meade Spangenberg. She is one of eight children raised in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Sandra was a 1958 graduate of Hancock Central School, in Hancock, New York.
Poppie and Sandra were married at the Hancock Baptist Church on 18 October 1958. They lived in Pennsylvania many years before moving to Miami, FL with their three children and Poppie’s parents. The summer of 1975 they bought a motel in Palatka and named it the Degeyter Motel. They both retired from Georgia Pacific. Poppie and Sandra’s first love were their family. They attended little league ball games, plays, school activities as well as hosting many family events at their home. They loved gardening, feeding the birds, reading and coin collecting. Poppie enjoyed recording each days’ temperature on a calendar for over 40 years. Sandra loved cooking, doing crafts with the children/grandchildren and shopping for her family.
Poppie is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Sr. and Lena DeGeyter. Sandra is preceded in death by her husband, Poppie DeGeyter and parents, Jesse and Helen Spangenberg, brothers, Stuart and Sidney and sister, Serenity Henry. Sandra is survived by sisters, Sylvia (Pete) Centeno, Helen Oestrich, Sharon (Bob) Gunn and brother, Stanley (Sharon) Spangenberg as well as many nieces and nephews.
Poppie and Sandra are preceded in death by infant daughter, Jacquelin DeGeyter, and grandchildren, infant Samantha Woodbury, Kelly and Vincent Rosamonda and B.J Stephens. They are survived by their daughter, Karen (Gary) Rosamonda, Peter DeGeyter(Sherry), Sandy Sogan, as well grandchildren, Nick (Kati) Rosamonda, Stephanie Rosamonda, Forrest Woodbury and Amanda Woodbury, Douglas DeGeyter (Cara), Josh DeGeyter (Brandy), Davey DeGeyter, Kim (Thomas) Thompson, Alisha (Thomas) Burger and Christy Stephens and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held to honor and celebrate the life of Poppie and Sandra at 6:00 pm on January 12, 2022, at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Interlachen. Services will be livestreamed and may be accessed on Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home’s Facebook page.
