Sarah Elizabeth Cone, 74, of Bannerville, passed away on September 16, 2023 surrounded by her family. She retired from Putnam Community Hospital where she worked as the early morning cook for many years. She was an honorary member of Putnam County Hunting Club.
Sarah was born in Alachua County and raised on her family farm where they grew tobacco, watermelon, peanuts, corn and hogs.
She married the love of her life, Goerge Cone, Sr. on September 3, 1966. They were married 43 years when George was called home to be with Jesus in September of 2009.
Sarah was a true bona fide country girl who loved to hunt and fish and was very successful at it. She loved to be outside with her fur baby and side kick “Doc” tending to her critters, which included cows, hogs and chickens, tending her garden or just tinkering around the yard.
Her favorite past time was having her family over and spending time with her grandchildren who were the loves of her life.
Sarah also loved to help the elderly in the community. She always had that one or two she would keep a check on to make sure they had what they needed.
Sarah was a “straight shooter” who always said what she felt and meant what she said. She kept it real at all times with a heart of gold, a prankster’s spirit and love for everyone.
Sarah is preceded in death by her one true love, her husband, George Cone, Sr., mother, Bertie Lou Winters, stepfather, Roy Winters, father, Sam Clegg, sisters, Mary Lou Stokes and Barbara “Susie” Ashe.
She is survived by her children, Loretta Griffis (Kevin) of Starke, Tillman Cone (Angie) of Bannerville and George Cone, Jr. (Cissy) of Perry, brothers, Frank Clegg (Lynn) and Donald Clegg (Nancy) both of Ruskin, grandchildren, Mark, Savannah, Katie Lynn, Catlin, Hannah, Paul and Phoebe, great-grandchildren, Maranda, Morgan, Rayne, George, Lily, Saphira, Cordelia and James, fur baby and loyal companion, “Doc” as well as grand dogs, “Chewy,” “Jax” and “Dixie.”
