Obituary for Virginia Evelyn "Ginny" McColm

Virginia E. “Ginny” McColm, 69, of Palatka, passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at home with her children by her side. Born in Wheeling, WVA, she graduated from John Marshall High School in Glen Dale, WVA. Ginny graduated from West Virginia University with her Bachelors’ Degree in Nursing and then received her Masters’ Degree from the University of Alabama – Birmingham. After moving to Palatka in 1990 from Charlotte, NC, she began working at Putnam Community Medical Center where she served as Director of Nursing. Ginny later developed the nursing program at St. Johns River Community College and served as Dean of the Nursing Program. With her vast knowledge in the field of nursing, she served on the Board of Directors for several hospitals throughout Northeast Florida. In 1999, Ginny saw a need in the community and formed McColm Homes, Inc. whose purpose was to serve developmentally disabled individuals in a residential group home setting. She owned and operated McColm Homes, Inc. until 2014. She was also a member of the Church of Christ. In her leisure time, Ginny could be found shopping at local thrift stores and collecting antiques and glassware.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Cooper McColm, her parents, Harold and Eva Jones and 2 aunts, Mildred Jones and Edna Jones.
Ginny is survived by 2 daughters, Victoria McColm of St. Augustine, FL and Christine McColm of Palatka, FL 2 sons, Cooper (Hope) McColm of Thomasville, GA and Stuart McColm of Jacksonville, FL a brother, Brent Jones of Emporia, KS, a sister, Suzie (John) Winding of Little River, CA, 4 grandchildren, Frank Cooper McColm III, Charlie McColm, Jackson McColm and Evey McColm, a sister-in-law, Janet Jones of AK, a sister-in-law Harriette Newman of NC and nieces and nephews, Misty (Stephen) Crim, Brittany Crim, Bryan Crim and Gavin Armstrong of AK, Carri (Mark) Elfstrom and Luella Elfstrom of AK, Robin (Ben) Jones-Griese of AK, Margaret Gehring of NC, Beth Gehring, Angelina Manuel and Lucy Manuel of NC, Jenny (David) Breedlove, Gavin Andrews, Hunter Andrews and Remington Breedlove of NC, David (Chris) Hutchinson, Will Hutchinson and Heather Hutchinson of NC.
Memorial services celebrating Ginny’s life will be at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of services at 3:00 P.M.
