Obituary for William Vernette "Bim" Cummings

William Vernette “Bim” Cummings, 68, of Crescent City, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at Community Hospice Center for Caring at Baptist Medical Center South in Jacksonville following an extended illness. A native of Delaware, Ohio, Bim resided in Crescent City the past 6 years coming from Deltona where he had also lived for 6 years. He served honorably for 24 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. Following his retirement from the Navy, he then transitioned to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office where he served as a Deputy Sheriff for 4 years, until an injury in the line of duty forced him to retire. CWO 2 Cummings worked 7 years at the North Florida Naval Shipyard in Jacksonville. Never one to not be serving, CWO 2 Cummings then worked another 2 years at the V.A. Medical Center in Orlando. In his leisure time, Bim enjoyed fishing and playing the guitar. Bim was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed singing and worshiping his Master.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse W. Cummings and Bernice Matson Cummings.
Bim is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Cummings of Crescent City, 3 children, Jeremy Wain Cummings (Kimberly) of Orange City, Dawn Renee Emery (Shane) of Deltona and Chad William Cummings of Crescent City, 7 siblings, Lectra Richards (David) of Marion, OH, Michael Cummings (Mary Lou) of Debary, Karen Elchert (Don) of Delaware, OH, Patricia Brush (Tom ) of West Jefferson, OH, Jay Cummings of Orange City, Beatrice Strobridge (Mark) of Bunnell and Christopher Cummings (Linda) of Telford, PA, 10 Grandchildren, Brianna Cummings, Amber Nejjari, Austin Emery, Ethan Emery, Kai Cummings, Caiden Emery, River Cummings, Chloe Cummings, Caleb Kirk and Emmalise Nejjari, one great-grandchild, Chase Emery as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services celebrating Bim’s life will be at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastor Jeff Burnsed officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3:00 P.M. until the time of services at 5:00 P.M.
Graveside services will be at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Chuluota Community Cemetery in Seminole County with Pastor Richard Mays officiating. The U.S Navy will also conduct full military honors.
