Obituary for Charles R. Martin

Charles R. “Charlie” Martin, 81, of Palatka, passed away Monday, October 12, 2015 at Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Oxford, Florida , Charlie was raised in the Miami area and was a graduate of Edison High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Charlie retired in 1996 as electronics technician after serving 42 years with Bellsouth Telephone Company. Leading back to his days serving in the Air Force, Charlie continued his love for aviation, enjoying air shows and was a pilot for parachute jumpers. Among his favorite past-times were fishing, gardening and waterfowl hunting. Charlie also enjoyed woodcarving and was a member of the Bass Capital Woodcarvers.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Shelia M. Martin, who passed away just 3 weeks earlier on September 16th.
Charlie is survived by 2 daughters, Elizabeth Ann Martin of Gastonia, NC and Janet Kaye Martin of Palatka, 4 grandchildren, Charlie Madzia, Grace Madzia, Andy Madzia and Katherine Madzia, an aunt, Winnie Spivey of Winter Haven and a cousin, Wanda Spivey of Winter Haven.
Services will be at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of services at 3:00 P.M.
